I learned: Measure only the side of the head that is exposed. Any covering, hair, hat, etc. will prevent the heat from dissipating, and would cause the reading to be falsely high. This also applies if one side of the head is into a pillow.

The temporal artery thermometer scans the forehead area for the temporal artery and it is almost impossible to miss the artery during a scan.

I had no idea: The best place to measure temperature is the center of the heart, but this can be done only under a doctor's supervision. Doctors know that measurement of the blood temperature in a major artery accurately reflects true body temperature. The TemporalScanner Thermometer is designed to measure the temperature of the skin surface over the temporal artery, a major artery of the head.

I learned that you should measure only the side of the head that is exposed. Any covering, hair, hat, etc. will prevent the heat from dissipating, and would cause the reading to be falsely high. This also applies if one side of the head is into a pillow.

A major reason ear thermometers are considered inaccurate by medical professionals is because the positioning of the probe in the ear canal is inconsistent, thus creating inconsistent readings and frequently missing fevers. trinitygsd at yahoo dot com
  • *~Annette~* · 6 months ago
I just learned about the ear canal being inconsistent, but didn't know why using the forehead was better. It explained about the temporal artery and how it is a good measurement because of it being a main artery. Who knew!
  • ktanjatk · 6 months ago
I learned that the temporal artery thermometer scans the forehead area for the temporal artery and it is almost impossible to miss the artery during a scan.

I learned that the temporal artery gives the most accurate measurement of temperature in the body. I guess my mom knew what she was doing all those years she went around feeling my forehead.

I learned that they're more accurate than the ear thermometers. I currently have an ear thermometer and don't use it because I always thought it was so inaccurate. I'd love to try one of these. Plus I like that they can take the temp so quickly and non-invasively.

    Thanks!

Apparently the most common source of errors in using this device is forgetting to take the cap off the sensor head. Message to self: "Self, remember that!"

The best place to measure temperature is the center of the heart, not that this is feasible, but interesting, thanks for the great giveaway!
  • z. Smith · 6 months ago
I learned that the Exergen Temporal Scanner Thermometer has been clinically tested for accuracy compared to rectal thermometers and temperature sensors inserted in the heart during course of patient treatment and accepted for use in major hospitals, making it the ideal thermometer for use with newborns, infants, children or adults.

  • Tara · 6 months ago
I learned that: First it scans like a video camera, capturing naturally emitted infrared heat from the arterial blood supply at about 1000 “frames” per second, locking in the highest temperature it senses

If sweating, the temperature on the neck behind the ear lobe becomes the overriding temperature, and since this area is not quite as stable as the temporal artery.

Arterial temperature is the same temperature as the blood flowing from the heart. It is the best determinate of body temperature.
